The Challenge: Interlocking Crises, Structural Roots

In Oakland and across the U.S., systemic issues like incarceration, addiction, trauma, and food insecurity are driving disconnection and suffering. These problems are deeply rooted in structural racism, lack of access to healing care, environmental harm, and extractive food systems. Incarceration & Addiction In Alameda County, unhoused people are significantly overrepresented in jail bookings. Over 75% of incarcerated individuals with severe mental illness also experience substance abuse. Chronic Disease & Food Insecurity The U.S. spends the most on healthcare among wealthy nations, yet has the lowest life expectancy—due in part to poor nutrition and lack of preventive care in low-income communities. Food Waste & Environmental Harm Nearly 40% of U.S. food is wasted, while millions go hungry. This waste also releases greenhouse gases that worsen climate change. Healthy soil, healthy life. The Solution: Holistic Detox & Recovery Support System (HDRSS) Holistic Detox & Recovery Support System (HDRSS) is a peer-led culturally rooted community-based healing collective based in Oakland, California and connected globally. It supports people navigating recovery from addiction, incarceration, and homelessness though holistic care --combining ancestral medicine, detox, and wraparound support. Grounded in lived experience, HDRSS centers systems of care that honor dignity, autonomy, and the healing power of culture. Peer to Peer Community Support Wellness Education & Holistic Care Green Entrepreneurship & Workforce Development “When I made the decision to get clean and sober from substance abuse, EFAM was there for me, never judging me but always offering love and compassion. Their unwavering support has been pivotal in my journey to recovery. I trust them so much, especially when there are so many others who don’t even see you as a human being.” — Leajay Harper, HDRSS Addiction Doula “I’ve had many traumas in my life; including childhood sexual assault, mental, and emotional abuse, and physical abuse from domestic violence. Attending HDRSS has provided me with the opportunity to gain assistance with services crucial to my healing path, and personal well-being. - Angel Heart, Homefulness

What's Your Medicine? Wood St.
Loading...
WYM at Wood Street brought together over 30 different practitioners from all stripes to bring healing to the unhoused residents of Wood Street, one of the largest encampments of unhoused people on the West Coast.
This initiative demonstrates our commitment to bringing holistic healing practices directly to communities in need, recognizing that medicine comes in many forms and should be accessible to all.
Solestial Church
The Problem: Disconnection from Land, Lineage, and Each Other
Centuries of colonization have fractured our relationships — with the Earth, with ancestral wisdom, and with one another. The impacts ripple through every layer of society: families strained by intergenerational trauma, communities fragmented by systemic injustice, and movements exhausted by cycles of burnout and disillusionment.
We are living through a collective crisis of disconnectionspiritual, relational, and ecological.
This is not just a moment of collapse. It is a moment of return: to ritual, to right relationship, to the sacred web of life that holds us all. As Bayo Akomolafe reminds us, “The times are urgent. Let us slow down.”
The Offering: Elemental Activism
Relational Rituals for embodied collective liberation helping change makers and activists build capacity and effectiveness for social transformation.
The four tracks below are workshop and training focuses

Elemental Education

Educational workshops, activations, and retreats for movement sustainability and coalition-building Intercultural, interfaith, intergenerational, and interracial leadership convenings Generative conflict frameworks and capacity-building for organizers Access to holistic, trauma-informed healing for low-income changemakers Creative rituals, ceremony, and gatherings to restore collective rhythm and relational repair Thought leadership at the intersection of spirituality, justice, and planetary healing

Our Method: Ceremonial Organizing

"Ceremonial Organizing is a response to movement building where spirituality and ancestral wisdom can no longer be considered an 'add-on' part of the work." … Our community includes plants and black panthers and our tools are poems and potions. We believe that these times of socio-political unrest, environmental degradation, and other pivotal shifts in human culture, provide a critical opportunity and imperative to build somatic and spiritual capacity. An enlarged cosmovision of a multidimensional humanity that includes relationships with the "unseen and the elemental worlds" are integral to the forward progress and evolutionary processes of humanity.

Earth Amplified
The Problem: A Media System That Dulls, Divides, and Distracts
Media shapes the consciousness of entire societies—but today’s media landscape has been hijacked. It manipulates attention, prioritizes profit, and programs conformity, flooding us with noise while starving us of wisdom.
Indigenous voices, ancestral knowledge, and Earth-based traditions are pushed to the margins – left out of the dominant cultural narrative. The stories we consume condition us to accept systems of extraction, domination, and disconnection.
We must ask: Where are the voices of the sacred plants, soil microbes, elders, and youth holding ancestral memory?
